1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
Race into Reading!
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a nationwide challenge that encourages caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000 – book goal in three years and provide their children with essential early literacy skills.
Every book counts – even if your child wants to hear the same book again and again, you can count it each time. You can also count the books your child hears in story time, daycare or preschool, or with a friend or family member, as long as your child listens to the entire book. They can be books from the library or books that you own. Every time your child reads a story they can color in a book on their log.
To register please visit the Plumb Memorial Library Children’s Department where you will receive everything you and your child need to start. If you feel more comfortable emailing than coming to the library you can email the Children’s Department at plumbchildrensdept@gmail.com to request a folder via our curbside service. Please include your child’s name and age in the email request with 1000 Books Before Kindergarten in the subject line.
The Library will award a prize once your child reads 100, 500, and 1000 books. Make sure to visit the Library often so your child can move their racecar farther down the track on our “Race into Reading” board. Children and caregivers can track their progress at home with the included Grand Prix Tracker. For extra motivation your child can place a racing sticker at every 100-book milestone!
This is a self-guided program, meaning you set the pace that you and your child read and record.
Happy Reading,
Plumb Memorial Library Children’s Department
