Dear Miss Maura… A Pen Pal Club

When I was a kid one of things I most looked forward to was writing letters to my Pen Pal. I would write a letter, send it off in the mail, and then I would eagerly run to the mailbox to see if there was a reply! A Pen Pal is a friend you write letters to -to keep in touch with and to get to know better by using the postal service. Since I am not hosting any library programs at this time and I am missing my Library Friends, I have decided to create this unique library friendship correspondence program: “Dear Miss Maura: A Pen Pal Club”.
Each Pen Pal will be required to make a commitment to write two (2) letters a month for 4 months (December, January, February and March). I know you are probably thinking, “That’s a lot of letters, Miss Maura! ” It really isn’t, as it is only eight (8) letters total. Pen Pal letters will be addressed to: Plumb Memorial Library, Miss Maura, 65 Wooster Street, Shelton, CT 06484.
I promise if your child writes to me, I will write to your child. Each Pen Pal is required to register and must be between ages 5-10 years old. I will provide each registered Pen Pal with a special “Pen Pal Kit” which will include: instructions, paper, stamps, envelopes, writing utensils, a schedule of suggested monthly writing topics and a few other goodies! I will also give a list of suggested monthly writing topics for the Pen Pal letters.
Once your child has registered, please come to Plumb Memorial Library either inside the library, Monday through Friday: 9:00AM – 4:30PM and Saturday: 10:00AM – 3:00PM or during Curbside Pickup: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday from 10:00AM – 2:00PM and pick-up your child’s Pen Pal Kit. NO appointment is needed. Just make sure to let the curbside attendant know you are here for a Pen Pal kit and give them your child’s name.
I will also provide Pen Pal videos on my Miss Maura’s Programs Facebook Page offering writing tips, advice and encouragement plus I will share library books that feature letter writing and Pen Pals. If you have any questions about this program, please email me: mgualtiere@biblio.org or call me at (203) 924-1580 ext. 5108.
